In addition to presenting the research and monitoring activities of the cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea, the event has provided the opportunity to exhibit the best shots of the photo-identified animals and show the preview of the Docu-film “Insights: On the Route to Cetaceans”.  To excite the guests and make the evening unforgettable, the performance of a Live Wall by Street Artist Marco Tarascio “Moby Dick”, international artist for the protection of cetaceans.

During the Festa, the Association introduced its research activities in the Mediterranean Sea, namely Ischia Dolphin Project - carried out in the waters of Ischia and Ventotene - and Delfini Capitolini, research programme of cetaceans inhabiting the Roman coastline, in the area facing Fiumicino, Ostia and Torvaianica, including the Protected Marine Area of Secche di Tor Paterno. Between June and December 2015, Delfini Capitolini – named after the classification of the dolphins by the names of Roman Emperors -  produced relevant results, allowing the researchers to identify about 90 animals. Thanks to the support of OceanCare, international organisation for the protection of oceans, ODO will be able to map the 2011-2012 sightings with the recent results.

The project has its operational Headquarters at Marine Village Academy, and Guido Sirolli, president of Tognazzi Marine Village, opened the event with a welcome address.

The Festa saw a great participation of ODO’s friends and colleagues as well as new supporters, members and volunteers. We asked Daniela Silvia Pace, ODO president, to tell us her impressions on the evening: “A big thank you to all of you who came at the event, our researchers, supporters and volunteers…. your warmth and energy makes us proud and encourage us to keep working hard for the protection of cetaceans in the Mediterranean!”

The event also provided the opportunity to meet representatives of the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA) – an international coalition of organisations dedicated to cetaceans and with whom ODO is developing new partnerships. Ian Rowlands, co-founder of WCA and Director of WhaleFest – an event that gathers 15,000 visitors in the UK – remarks “it is always inspiring to see people gathering who are passionate about whales and dolphins, working on their behalf. t is my belief that this region deserves, and would benefit from, a big public celebration and gathering to raise awareness and money to expand these projects and do even more - a whale and dolphin festival right here!”

Moreover, the international Street Artist Marco Tarascio “Moby Dick” homaged ODO with a performance of a “Live Wall” with a whale theme, exciting all, adults and children. Through his art, whales and dolphins became alive amongst the guests of the evening…Art for the protection of cetaceans!

With our heart filled with pride and renewed determination to keep working hard for the study and protection of cetaceans in our seas, Oceanomare Delphis thanks everybody and all the Friends of ODO!
