BluEmission

“Human-caused underwater noise is already triggering a kind of acoustic fog and a cacophony of sound in many parts of the world seas and oceans”

Oceanomare Delphis Onlus launches the pilot project " bluEmission" which aims to measure the impact on cetaceans of an hybrid electric propulsion system mounted on the research boats.

In particular, we will test and compare the cetacean’s behavioral reactions when they are approached using electric propulsion to those observed when they are approached using the diesel propulsion;

We will also test and compare the production of sounds and types of vocalizations emitted by cetaceans in the proximity of the research boat driven by electric propulsion to those recorded when they are in the proximity of the same boat driven by diesel propulsion.

AIMS

In response to a number of international NGOs calling for "a wide-ranging action including a requirement that builders and owners of all vessels, from super-tankers down, working with the competent international body, factor noise reduction measures into vessels design and operation at the outset. And that all noise producers embrace new quieter technology and make other efforts to reduce noise and work with effective standards set by appropriate regulatory bodies" Oceanomare Delphis Onlus (ODO) launch the pilot project "bluEmission" which aims to measure the impact on cetaceans of an electric propulsion system mounted on its research vessel.

In particular, we will:

•          test and compare the cetaceans' behavioral reactions when they are approached using electric propulsion to those observed when they are approached using the diesel propulsion;

•          test and compare the production of sounds and types of vocalizations emitted by cetaceans in the proximity of the research vessel driven by electric propulsion to those recorded when they are in the vicinity of the same vessel driven by diesel propulsion.

INTRODUCTION

Many marine mammals communicate by emitting sounds that pass through water. Such sounds can be received across great distances and can influence the behavior of these undersea creatures. In the past few decades, the oceans have become increasingly noisy, as underwater sounds from propellers, sonars, and other human activities make it difficult for marine mammals to communicate.

From 1950 to 2000, low frequency underwater noise has doubled every 10 years. This increase is related to the number of ships, which has tripled.

Between 1985 and 2001, a 77% increase was recorded in the volume of ship cargo loaded onto and unloaded off Mediterranean ports. Every year, 220,000 ships greater than 100 tons cross the Mediterranean basin and approximately 30% of international sea-borne volume originates from or is directed towards the 300 ports in the Mediterranean Sea. The numbers are expected to grow three or four fold in the next 20 years. These figures do not include the traffic in recreational ships, military vessel sand high-speed ferries.

The cacophony of sounds pervading the seas is intensifying threats to marine mammals who use sound, sometimes over great distances, to communicate, forage for food and find mates. Exposure to sound can produce a range of effects on marine mammals, from behavioral changes and stress to physical acoustic trauma and organs' damage.

A further concern is represented by the increasing of CO2 levels in the atmosphere, that are causing greater absorption of CO2 by the oceans and leading to acidification. Apart from the direct impact this has on ecosystems, the acidity of the water also allows noise to travel further, increasing the impact of noise pollution. Under reasonable projections of future fossil fuel CO2 emissions and other sources a pH change of 0.3 units or more can be anticipated by mid-century, resulting in a decrease in sound absorption by almost 40%.

Ambient noise levels in the ocean within the auditory range critical for environmental, military, and economic interests are set to increase significantly due to the combined effects of decreased absorption and increasing sources from mankind’s activities

PARTNERS

The project can count on the support of a number of institutions and organizations that have decided to join the mission of Oceanomare Delphis Onlus. In particular:

-           Casamicciola Terme Municipality: located in the norther part of the island of Ischia it has a commercial port and marina where the research vessel is hosted.

-           Fondazione BNC: the "Fondazione Banca Nazionale delle Comunicazioni" operates by providing grants to public and private parties, for the implementation of activities within the areas of action provided by the Statute, including the protection and environmental quality.

-           Twin Disc: an international manufacturer of power transmission equipment worldwide known as manufacturer of marine gears. They produce hybrid propulsion solutions for ecological boating, reducing noise, vibration, heat and emissions.

-           Giardini Poseidon: thermal park located on the Island of Ischia, in the Bay of Citara, already known to the Romans for its extraordinary boiling waters, and set in one of the most beautiful view on the island.

-           Pro Wildlife: German organization for the protection and the conservation of the animals and their environment, founded in 1999 by biologists, veterinarians and conservationists.

-           Officina Migliaccio: a workshop with forty years of experience in the field of mechanical engineering and lathing techniques, handed down from father to son; it is located on the Island of Ischia.

-           Emmeci due: dealership FPT Industrial SpA (formerly IVECO Motors) for resale, parts and maintenance for marine and industrial engines and generators.

 We thanks all the supporting partners, in particular the Casamicciola Terme Municipality and the Fondazione BNC for their sustainment to the project.
