WDTP
WHALE AND DOLPHIN TYRRHENIAN PROGRAM
After 20 years of research on cetaceans in the waters of Ischia (Gulf of Naples, Italy), which led to the establishment of a Marine Protected Area dedicated to the critical habitat of common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), endangered species in the Mediterranean, ODO decides to expand its area of research, as well as the objectives of the same, in the foundation of "Whale and Dolphin Tyrrhenian Program."
Jean Gab, the main research vessel will sail together with Alba, a new boat that shares methods for collecting and storing data. The two boats are sailing in the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, their major ports are located on the islands of Ischia and Elba.
The main objective of WDTP is to identify key areas (feeding and breeding ground) as well as ecological ways used by cetaceans during their migrations in the Mediterranean basin.
The areas identified will be brought to the attention of politicians and leaders, suggesting methods for their protection and management. Beyond the objectives of the research, each project has as its purpose the education and dissemination, to develop the knowledge and awareness of the general public to meet the needs of conservation of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean.
Expeditions are opened to enthusiastic people willing to share the field work with us. No particular skills are required to join.
