Historical

We have been contacted by the Meunier Daragnès family, the heirs to Jean Gabriel Daragnès, first owner of Jean Gab.

&nbspIt was Pierre Meunier who got in touch with us and presented us with these beautiful photos of jean Gab. They go back to the years in which it was built and started navigating the seas.

Pierre’s grandmother, Jeannine Daragnès, remarried the third time to Jean Gabriel; her first husband was Meunier, and within this marriage Paul Meunier was born, Pierre’s father.

Oggi Today, Pierre and his sister are probably the only heirs of Jean Gabriel Daragnès. Pierre writes that he knows not whether there are any other relatives living in Bordeaux, where Jean Gabriel was born. Pierre is now living in Barcelona, Spain.

Jean Gabriel Daragnès (1889-1950) was editor and typographer in Paris, and also painter-illustrator and engraver.

As an artist, his career started as a painter, soon shifting to the art of engraving.

His pieces of work testify his love for books in general. Not only was he illustrating his own books, but he was also master typographer and bibliophile.

He assembled a circle of friends, some of which were writers as Colette, Carco, Valéry, Mac Orlan, Celine and Giraudoux, others were artists, such as Galanis, Bofa, Dufy, Gen Paul, Falké and the editor Emile Paul.

They used to gather together every Saturday, to shape new mutual pieces of art and projects, at Daragnès’ atelier in Montmartre.
